Fictions of Every Kind: At the Movies (recap)

24 September 2018

In collaboration with Scalarama Leeds, a national celebration of DIY film programming and general cinema appreciation!

We were thrilled to host two amazing Yorkshire writers, Maureen Lennon and Laura Potts, as our invited speakers:

MAUREEN LENNON: a graduate of Bristol University and the MA in Writing for Performance and Publication at Leeds University. She is a West Yorkshire Playhouse FUSE writer and a co-founder of new writing company Bellow Theatre. She has written work for Paines Plough, Sheffield Theatres, Hull Truck, Assemble Fest and HeadsUp Festival. LAURA POTTS, a twice-named Foyle Young Poet of the Year, has been listed in The Oxford Brookes International Poetry Prize and nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She became one of the BBC’s New Voices in 2017 and received a commendation from The Poetry Society in 2018.

Our OPEN MIC sign-up list was shorter this month, but included stunning work from Mon Dickson, Ian Harker, Moira Garland, and a rare contribution from our usual compere, Jenna Isherwood.

Our HOUSE BAND (BETA-Max Bygraves) surpassed themselves with this selection of movie music:

Intro - The Atrocity Exhibition / The Neverending Story (Giorgio Moroder)

Eighth Day - Hazel O’Connor

Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel

Save Me - Aimee Mann

Together in Electric Dreams - Giorgio Moroder & Phil Oakey

The Porpoise Song - The Monkees
