Fictions of Every Kind: Outside (August 2011)
It might appear to have gone all quiet on the Fictions… front, but do not be afraid - for we have plenty of plans! We have several events planned between now and the end of the year. In fact, we even have nascent plans for next year. (Planning more than nine months in advance? What is this madness?!)
After Fictions of Every Kind… Missing in May, I was approached by one of the organisers of theBeacons festival about a possible collaboration. Beacons Festival is a small and extremely cool festival that takes place every year just outside Skipton, the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Acts appearing this year include former Mercury Music Nominees Polar Bear; bleeding-edge Kraut-rock electronica upstarts Runners; and the extremely talented sound-layering lo-fi legend Napoleon III. There are plenty more besides, but not enough room to list them all here…
On Saturday 13th August in the Into the Woods tent, several writers invited by Fictions of Every Kind will be reading pieces responding to the theme ‘Outside’. As ever, with Fictions…., you can expect a variety of forms and responses. There will be readings from open mic regulars Catherine Stone & Kathryn Glass, who’ll be collaborating on a series of interweaving pieces; satire and humour from the rhythmic, but not hip-hop, Nasser Hussein; timely fantasy and dark speculative work from Sam Francis; and flashes of fiction from yours truly, Sarah Bradley. It’ll be in the afternoon - keep checking back for a confirmation on the time. As usual, the programme will be rounded off by a musical act. We’ll be really pleased to welcome back the marvellously idiosyncratic These Men, a barbershop quintet who sang at one of our events earlier on this year. Here’s a video of them in action.
