Fictions of Every Kind: Family
Tuesday September 19th, Wharf Chambers, with SJ Bradley & Emily Devane
Wharf Chambers, 23-25 Wharf Street, 19.30 start, £3 in.
Whilst it's often said that blood is thicker than water, what nobody ever says is that blood's a sticky substance, one that nobody likes to see too much of. Talk of families and we think of brothers, sisters, mums, dads, distant aunts and uncles, long-dead ancestors. Yet there are all types of families: urban families, close-knit communities, drag families - many people who can't connect with the families who birthed them, choose and create loving families of their own. We invite you to muse upon this subject at our September event. Our invited speakers will be: EMILY DEVANE originally from Derbyshire, Emily is a much-published and many times shortlisted short fiction writer. She has been shortlisted for the Brighton Prize, and has won the Haringey Literature Live Open Studios Award and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. In 2016 she was a Word Factory Apprentice and recently won a New Writing North Award. SJ BRADLEY is a writer from Leeds, UK, whose fiction has been published in the US and UK, including in Litro, Queen Mobs, and Willesden Herald New Short Stories. She has been Writer in Residence for First Story, and is director of the Northern Short Story Festival. Her first novel, Brick Mother, was longlisted for the Guardian First Novel Award; her second, Guest, is out now, published by Dead Ink Books. As ever, there will be music from our superb House Band, and a writers' open mic. Flash fiction, short fiction, true stories, and excerpts of longer work are all welcome at our open mic BUT please keep your contributions at 5 minutes or under - don't make us ring our bell at you! Gifts will be available for all open mic participants. Entry, as ever, is the brilliant pre-credit crunch late 90's price of £3. * Please note: Wharf Chambers is a members club and you must be a member to attend an event here. Joining costs £1 and takes a minimum of 48 hours to take effect. To join, see www.wharfchambers.org
